NFL Week Five Shocker: Eagles Fall to Broncos and Patriots Stun Bills

NFL Action

The last two undefeated teams in the NFL watched their flawless starts broken during the fifth week as the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills suffered shocking losses on their own turf.

Denver's football team evolved from dark horses to headline-makers thanks to an spectacular rallying win against the current Super Bowl title holders Philadelphia, before hopping on a flight for this Sunday's London matchup.

The New England Patriots then visited Buffalo and halted Buffalo's perfect record with an impressive victory of their own in their first primetime appearance in a full year.

Baltimore's team suffered a third straight defeat - their defensive woes could be terminal for their postseason hopes - while Dallas, Indianapolis Colts, and Detroit enjoyed blowout wins on another eventful Sunday.

Broncos Defeat Title Holders

It wasn't just defeating the Super Bowl champions, but the way of their comeback from 14 points down that made the Broncos' 21-17 victory in Philadelphia such a signature success.

Philadelphia had secured 10 contests in a row, 12 straight on home turf and 20 out of 21 total before Broncos quarterback Bo Nix engineered two touchdowns in five fourth-quarter minutes and a last-minute three-pointer.

The Eagles are currently 4-1 but there is significant concern about the offence, which sits among one of the worst in the NFL. Receiver DaVonta Smith says they are not "in sync" with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Broncos' defensive unit, which sacked Hurts six times, had much to contribute with the outcome, and, together with a genuine franchise quarterback in Nix and elite coach in Sean Payton, they possess all the components to launch a legitimate playoff push.

The Broncos meet New York's Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Patriots on National TV Shock Buffalo

Should the Broncos' victory was somewhat anticipated, few predicted the Patriots traveling to Buffalo and defeating Josh Allen's Bills, but they accomplished it with tremendous resilience.

A first primetime game for the rookie quarterback delivered a star-making showing as he led a game-winning field goal drive in the dying seconds to secure victory 23-20.

Maye was tough and executed the right throws at the right times, several to ex-Buffalo wideout Stefon Diggs, who had a big game for Mike Vrabel's team.

Vrabel was anticipated to improve the situation in New England, but a win like this came earlier than many predicted.

Patriots Defense

The Patriots defence contained the Buffalo Bills attack during their surprising away win.

Baltimore Postseason Hopes Over?

The season is turning into a disaster for the Ravens, who were missing multiple defensive stars as they were dominated 44-10 by the Houston Texans.

It equaled their biggest home defeat, and falling to 1-4 for this year means among the pre-season Super Bowl favourites have just a small chance of making the postseason.

Baltimore are now 4-11 playing without superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was injured, but the real issue is a historically bad defense that is the primary concern - for a team that have been known for stout defense historically.

Houston strolled to the win as the Ravens became the initial squad in the Super Bowl era to allow at least 37 points in four of their first five contests. Their season is effectively in tatters.

Lions, Bucs and Colts Go 4-1

The Lions' backfield tandem Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery scored a touchdown in one contest for the fourteenth occasion - a shared NFL record - as Detroit put away Cincinnati 37-24.

The win made it four wins consecutively for the league's top scorers Detroit, but none against opponents with a winning record.

A more surprising 4-1 team are the Indianapolis Colts. With Jonathan Taylor running in a hat-trick in their decisive hammering of Las Vegas and signal-caller Daniel Jones appearing as a new man, they will be a tough match for any team.

Tampa Bay joined the 4-1 club with a thrilling 38-35 win in Seattle in which both teams traded nine touchdowns in 10 impressive drives before the Seahawks faltered initially with a final-minute turnover.

Chase McLaughlin booted the winner with the final play of the game for the second time this season. Each of Tampa Bay's wins have been clinched in the final moments.

New Orleans and Tennessee Get Help for Initial Victories

Given how New Orleans and Tennessee began this campaign, they required assistance to get their first wins, and they received ample thanks to some farcical mistakes from the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals.

After a strong opening from first-year player Jaxson Dart, New York committed five giveaways - one was decisively returned for a touchdown - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on an 87-yard catch and run as New Orleans prevailed 26-14.

Arizona were even worse as they squandered a substantial advantage primarily thanks to two massive mistakes.

First, Emari Demercado unexplainably fumbled the football just before crossing the line for a long score.

More disastrous was to come when Arizona intercepted Cam Ward close to their end zone, then fumbled the football into the end zone for Tyler Lockett to recover as Tennessee snapped a ten-contest slide with a narrow victory.

Seahawks Receiver

The receiver scored one of the most farcical scores we'll see this season.

That left the Jets as the sole victory-less squad remaining in the NFL after their bruising 37-22 defeat by the Cowboys.

The quarterback became the first player in NFL history to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 yards rushing in his first 20 professional contests as he came back from injury to guide the Washington Commanders to an impressive 27-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rico Dowdle was the standout performer for the Carolina Panthers with 206 rushing yards in their exciting 27-24 victory over Miami.
