Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and enthusiasts have encountered plenty of interesting independent titles. However, one is particularly notable for its quirky concept. Called Unko Technica, this classic-feel side-scrolling game includes a character that is truly a dung trying to travel to a restroom. As a fun fact, "Unko" translates to "poop."
The gameplay is simple: press a one button to leap. Across 150 stages, encounter mini-bosses and visit a market to purchase skins for your dung hero.
Time your movements with caution, as a error means restarting the level. Leap using floating orbs to propel your character to new heights, traverse fragile platforms, and touch buttons to reveal new areas. Collect UN-KOINS and use them on more difficult stages where things gets crazy.
Visually, the demo features vibrant stages and a killer music score. Its minimalist visual style with morphing basic polygons could recall players of classic titles like Earthbound.
Although difficult to name other games where you control a coiled turd, interactive entertainment have long featured fecal matter. For example, in Death Stranding, you can make explosives from character excrement. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ dung as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, such content shows up a lot in the adventure The Stick of Truth.
Despite its humorous premise, Unko Technica has already garnered notable awards, such as taking top honors at Bandai Namco's game competition in 2023. A playable preview is accessible now on Steam, with the final release set to arrive on Steam this November.
